Drawing of Earl's Grill
Content Description
This gift consists of a framed pen and ink drawing of Earl's Grill. Earl's stood at 389 Exchange Boulevard in a building erected in 1861. The building became Earl's in 1956, but had served as a restaurant under other names for some time previous. Due to its location near the Civic Center and Hall of Justice, the restaurant was a noted gathering place for local lawyers, judges and politicians. It was also popular with residents of the surrounding Corn Hill neighborhood. The Earl's Grill building depicted in this image came under City of Rochester ownership in 1977. when this part of the Third Ward entered in Urban Renewal plans. Despite this, the restaurant survived until 1985, when it was demolished to create space for the expansion of the Corn Hill Commons plaza. Earl's relocated to a shared space with Mr. Dominic's at 367 E. Main Street in 1985 and was initially successful, but closed its doors permanently in 1988 following a mix of parking problems and building damage resulting from the East Main street reconstruction project.
