Content Description
Photographic archive of the construction of the subway in the City of Rochester from 1923 to 1925. The collection also includes a photographic album of Rochester, England's cathedral, a memorial book created for the widow of Mayor Van Zandt, a book of concepts and plans from 1925 for a proposed civic center for Rochester, a number of loose photos from the subway construction, and the spade used by Mayor Van Zandt to ceremonially begin the construction of the subway.

Biographical / Historical
Rochester Mayor Clarence D. Van Zandt (1853-1926), served as mayor from 1922 until his death in 1926. Van Zandt presided over and held a prominient role in the costruction of Rochester's subway system. In addition to his leadership on the subway project, he advocated for other improvements in the city's transportation infrastucture, both as mayor and as president of the Automobile Club. He also supported expansion of the city's hospital, library, and museum.
Van Zandt was the first to break ground on the subway construction project, and participated in routine inspections of the contruction's progress.When Van Zandt fell ill in June of 1927, the project was put on an indefinate pause, six months before construction was to be completed on December 1, 1926.Extent
