Administrative History

This collection consists of records of the early years of the Rochester Cycling Club. Founded in 1967, the organization was founded to promote bicycle use, safety and infrastructure. An offshoot of the Genesee Valley Cycling Club, the Rochester Cycling Club separated itself through its focus on recreation and transportation, rather than being a cycle racing organization like the Genesee Valley club. The Rochester Cycling Club organized and promoted group rides from the very beginning. It also promoted the construction of a velodrome (bicycle track) in the Rochester area. Proposed in 1971, the velodrome would have been a banked one-fifth mile track intended for community use. While this collection ends in 1976, the organization continued onward. It changed its name to the Rochester Bicycling Club around 1976, and, as of the writing of this finding aid in 2020, it continues to support and promote cycling in the Rochester area.
