Administrative History

The Genesee Valley People’s Power Coalition was formed in 1973. It was a group of individuals and organizations that worked on utility issues in Rochester. The Genesee Valley Peoples’ Power Coalition fought against Rochester Gas & Electric rate increases, for safe energy, and for more consumer input into utility decision making. They were also for public owned utilities. The Coalition defeated Rochester Gas & Electric’s proposed 12% rate increase in 1976, as well as other rate hikes

The Genesee Valley Peoples’ Power Coalition was a chapter of the Peoples’ Power Coalition of New York. There is evidence suggesting that the Genesee Valley Peoples’ Power Coalition continued into the early 1980’s. After the 1980’s, the coalition may have been absorbed by one of the many environmental activist groups in Rochester, New York.
