Scope and Contents

Irving Booth was the son of James E. Booth, who was the president of the Monroe County Savings bank and a trustee to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) during the 1890s. Papers include letters and awards of merit related to James Booth's parents, Peter and Phebe; Cooper genealogy information; chattel and deeds; several ribbons; Irving Booth's Cornell University and Alpha Delta Phi ephemera, and miscellaneous ephemera.

Biographical Note

Irving Booth was born in 1861, and graduated with a degree in engineering from Cornell University in 1883. He was the founder of Booth Brothers Corporation, a manufacturer of shoe-making machines, with his brother Quentin. The company was sold to United Shoe Machinery a few years before his death on October 6, 1955. He was a member of the Cornell Club, Genesee valley Club and Country CLub of Rochester. A noted philanthropist, Irving Booth left much of his fortune to diverse Rochester charities. Notably, he left $632,293 to the Rochester Institute of technology, of which $500,000 was earmarked to pay for the Booth Memorial Building in honor of his late father, a former RIT trustee.
