This collection documents the musical career of Francis Samuel Pethick, director of the Slager and Veteran's Park Bands, from 1945 to 1960. It consists of consists of photographs and transcription discs. The materials primarily document the live performances of these bands. The transcription discs have been digitally transferred and the recordings are available for listening by request.

Biographical Note

Francis Samuel Pethick was born in Rochester, New York on March 30, 1899. He attended School #3 and West High School, before serving in the 108th Infantry Band (27th Division) as a Cornet player during the First World War from 1917 to 1920. Following demobilization, he attended Cornell University, graduating with a degree in Chemistry in 1923. He moved back to Rochester, marrying Ruth Frances Pethick on November 29, 1924. They would have one son, William Frances, in 1933.

With his return to Rochester, Pethick joined the American Legion Slager Post #941, where the Slager Band had formed in 1920. Pethick soon joined the Slager Band, ultimately serving as its Director from 1935 to 1945. The Slager Band found its greatest honor in winning the band competition at the October 1928 American Legion convention in San Antonio. Pethick would also serve as Monroe County Commander of the American Legion in 1928.

In 1945, at the request of the City of Rochester, Pethickre-organized the band as the Veterans' Park Band, which her led until 1960. In this 15-year span, the band performed in every city parade and provided many free concerts in city parks and at other city events. The Veterans' Park Band also provided the music for the dedication of the War Memorial in 1955, and won the Lem'rick Award (first place) in the American Legion State Championship in Albany.

Frances Samuel Pethick passed away on June 28, 1965.
