Scope and Contents

This collection consists of ephemera collected by gay rights activist and labor leader Tom Privitere between 1992 and 2006. The objects document both elements of Privitere's life. They include clothing, posters and pins related to gay rights and the AIDS crisis, along with pins connected to the labor movement, in particular his involvement with the CSEA.

Biographical Note

Tom Privitere is a Rochester, N. Y. and graduate of James Madison High School. A graduate of Cornell University in Industrial and Labor Relations, Mr. Privitere served as a leader in the labor movement in Rochester and around New York State for 42 years. He was long involved with the Public Employees Federation, ultimately retiring as 38 years with the organization in 2015. Mr. Privitere played a critical role in the foundation of Pride at Work as an AFL-CIO constituency group during the 1993 Gay March on Washington. In his personal life, Mr. Privitere came out in the 1970s and was a leading voice in Rochester's gay community for decades. The father of three children, Mr. Privitere lived in Pittsford, N. Y. for much of his life.
