Biographical Note

Charles Kittredge was born August 1, 1808 in Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts. After attending Bradford Academy, Dartmouth College and the Andover Theological Seminary, he was licensed as a preacher in the Presbyterian Church in 1838. It appears he spent time preaching in New England, as he married Sarah Walker at Spencer, Massachusetts in 1845. In the following years, he moved to Greece, New York, where he served as pastor of the Greece and Parma Presbyterian churches. Unfortunately, details of his time in Greece have been difficult to find. It is clear that the Kittredges had no children, that Charles did travel a substantial amount, and that Sarah owned property of her own in Clarkson, New York. It appears that late in life, Charles and Sarah moved to Charleston, New York (Montgomery, County). It was there that Charles Kittredge passed away on September 16, 1880. His wife continued to live in Charleston until her passing on February 27, 1899. They are buried together in West Clarkson Cemetery, Clarkson, New York.
