Biographical Note
Mary Elizabeth Stewart was born on July 11, 1830, to Roswell S. and Jerusha Burrows of Albion, New York. Roswell S. Burrows was a prominent banker and businessman. Mary Elizabeth eventually married Alexander Stewart, a cashier in her father's bank. Alexander would be appointed one of the executors of her father's substantial estate in 1879. This would embroil him in controversy, as the new President of the First National Bank of Albion, A. S. Warner, another executor, would go on to ruin the bank and the estate by absconding with the bank's bond holdings. The papers in this collection come from the period in which the estate was being executed and legal action involving the estate, its heirs and Warner were involved in frequent legal action. Alexander Stewart passed away on November 20, 1881. Mary Elizabeth Stewart followed on March 29, 1887.
