This collection documents the work of Matthew M. Hall during the design and construction of the second Erie Canal aqueduct at Rochester, New York.It consists of 4 ledger books used for calculations and other engineering tasks by Hall. The ledger books date from 1836 to 1838, with the fourth book dated 1842.

Biographical Note

Matthew M. Hall was born April 1, 1807 and died February 20, 1850 in Seneca Falls, New York. According to the 1838 Documents of the Assembly of the State of New York, he served as an assistant engineer in the enlargement of the Erie Canal. Later, he worked as a civil engineer in Rochester. He is buried in Rochester's Mount Hope Cemetery, under a stone topped with carvings of a ruler, protractor, compass and other tools of his trade.

Condition Description

One leather-bound ledger shows dried and failing binding, text block in good condition. Three paper-bound ledgers have sound bindings and strong text blocks.
