Biographical Note

Very little is known about Jarvis E. Smith. He was born in 1831 in Otsego County, N.Y., and moved to Clyde by 1854. His father, Chester, joined him in Clyde in 1857. Jarvis was a doctor, though the medical school he attended is unknown, and practiced in Clyde for decades; his partner from 1869 onward was Dr. J. Newton Arnold. Their practice was located at the corner of Glasgow and Ford Streets. Jarvis' father was a druggist, and ran a pharmacy on-site. Jarvis eventually took over this business from his father, obtaining a pharmacist license from New York State in 1884. In later years, as shown by the 1891 village directory, he moved the practice and pharmacy to his home on West Genesee Street, corner of Lock. Jarvis Smith's wife was Mary Derbyshire, and they had a daughter named Eugenia Caroline, born May 6, 1858. He passed away on March 9, 1902.
