Biographical / Historical

Corpus Christi Church (now Our Lady of the Americas) was founded and erected in 1888 to serve the growing Catholic population in the 5th Ward of the city of Rochester, New York. The fifteenth parish founded within the Diocese of Rochester, the original structure was designed by noted Rochester architect J. Foster Warner. It combined a school on the lower floor with a sanctuary above. In 1902, a new church building was erected next door at the corner of Prince and Main Streets. The existing building was then converted to serve solely as a school, with further additions in 1914 and 1924. The school operated until 1988, at which time it closed and was largely vacant while for sale. It was only in 2007 that Conifer Realty purchased the building in hopes of converting it to apartments. As a historic structure, a review of the site was required by the New York State Historic Preservation Office,, resulting in the documentation preserved here.
