Carlo E. De Santis Slide Collection
Content Description
This collection consists of 478 35mm Ektachrome and Kodachrome slides, housed in 24 slide protector pages, taken by Carlo E. De Santis in the 1970s and 1980s. A physician and architecture enthusiast, De Santis' slides depict buildings, street scenes and architectural details in the Rochester, New York area. The collection is in original order; De Santis did not have a formal arrangement for the collection outside of occasionally grouping images of the same type of building (such as churches) together.

Biographical Note
This note is based on biographical information provided by the De Santis family.
Born on June 21, 1932, in Rochester, New York, Carlo E. De Santis was one of five children in an Italian immigrant family. He worked in the pathology lab at St. Mary's Hospital as a teenager, and graduated from Madison High School in 1950. He then attended St. Bonaventure University, followed by a year of graaduate study in biology at the University of Rochester. De santis married Irene Sasso on July 23, 1955 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Rochester. They went on to have five children together.
Carlo De Santis went on to study medicine at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine, graduating in 1961. He thenn returned to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester for his internship, residency, and, ultimately employment from 1965 to 1980 as director of education of Ophthamology and from 1982 to 1987 as chief of Ophthamology. He was president of the medical and dental staff from 1983 to 1985, and led the development of the Samuel J. Ianacone Diagnostic and Treatment Center for outpatient eye disease care. De Santis spent over 20 years in private practice, establishing the Lakeview Medical Center as part of this practice.
Photography was one of his many interests. According to his family, De Santis was an inventor, author, painter, stamp collector, botanist, poet, art historian, music lover and architecture aficionado. Despite his professional success and numerous awards for for his work, he retired at the relatively young age of 55 due to poor health. In his last years, he focused on his hobbies and on charitable pursuits (his medical equipment was donated to a mission in Trinidad upon his retirement). He passed away at his Pittsford, New York home on February 25, 1992, aged 59.

Processing Information
The De Santis collection was received in original order, with the slides housed in PVC 35mm slide pages. The collection was rehoused into polypropylene slide pages in original order.
