This collection consists of the manuscript of John Krist's book, Faded Flags, a guide to Gettysburg casualties from Central and Western New York State. The hand lettered manuscript also includes the author's hand drawn maps of cemeteries and original photography. The contents of the colleciton date between 1995 and 2020. The collection consists of two separate donations (accessioned as 2020.022 and 2021.004).

Biographical / Historical

John Krist is a Rochester-area amateur historian, photographer and Civil War enthusiast, the descendant of Union soldiers from the Rush, New York area. He spent 25 years, from 1995 to 2020, researching Western and Central New York casualties at Gettysburg. Based on this work, he visited the gravesites of every casualty, documenting them with cemetery maps and head stone photographs for his book, Faded Flags. Released independently and in an addition of only 25 copies, Faded Flags is a unique addition to the literature on the American Civil War. The book is entirely hand lettered, presenting an artistic as well as a historic document.
