Wood Mowing and Reaping Machine (all Rochester businesses), along with 3 postcards of Rochester. All items addressed to the Chapin family of Whiteville, NY, between 1890 and 1904.

Biographical / Historical

Giles Horton Chapin was born on January 30, 1845 in West Union, New York to Alvin and Elvira Chapin. He married Mary L. Bess (1857-1952) on August 7, 1878;m they has four children together: Katherine, David, Sara and Marion. The family relocated from West Union to Whitesville in 1894. A successful farmer in West Union, Mr. Chapin became a businessman in Whitesville. He operated a furniture store (the source of this collection), was president of the First National Bank from its foundation, treasurer of the Whitesville Water Company, a director of the First State Bank of Canisteo and a vice president of the Hornell Fair. He also owned and managed the Chapin Opera House. Socially, he was a member of the Odd Fellows, the Maccabees and the Whitesville Mens Club. Giles Chapin passed away on August 26, 1915.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Gift of Katy Carrier, 2021. Materials in this collection were found in a barn belonging to Ms. Carrier's father's uncle, Giles Chapin. These materials were part of a much larger collection of trade publications related to the Chapin family's carriage and piano shop in Whitesville, New York. Ms. Carrier has separated the contents of the collection along geographic lines, and plans to send all the materials to appropriate repositories at the point of origin for the publications.
