Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the records of Rochester, New York-based Civil War veteran organization of the 108th Infantry Regiment of Volunteers. The materials date from 1889-1937 and consists of correspondence, address records, and speeches. The veteran organization communicated annual veteran reunions, notices of veteran's death, and veteran benefits.

Contents include correspondence addressed to Franklin B. Hutchinson from 1889 to 1918, his address records for veterans, and speeches in relation to the veterans' organization. Additional contents include correspondence addressed to Mrs. Franc Pugsley for organizations' matter's from 1923 to 1937.

Biographical / Historical

The 108th Infantry Regiment of Volunteers was active from August 19, 1862 until May 1865. The regiment consisted of 1,095 individuals and participated in atleast 16 engagements including Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg.

Franklin B. Hutchison was born July 1837 in New York. F.B. Hutchinson, whose letters have been addressed to - mustered in as a second lieutenant on August 9th, 1862. During the war, he was promoted to first lieutenant and quartermaster. He survived the war with two gun wounds and mustered out when the regiment concluded in May 1865. He later became a lawyer in Rochester and maintained communication with fellow comrads and eventually led the veteran's organization for the 108th New York Volunteers. His address book is organized to maintain correspondence to include when individuals passed away. He passed away in Rochester on June 6, 1919 at the age of 81.

Franc F. Pugsley was elected to be the organization's secretary during the 1922 veteran's reunion due to the advanced age of veteran's themselves. She maintained correspondence with veteran's widows and organizational matters until 1937. There is no record of a veteran of the 108th with the surname of Pugsley.
