Abstract

This collection consists of various paper materials in regards to General George Custer. Within the collection are newspaper clippings, correspondence between Custer and his cousin Augusta, and program material from a reunion of military groups.

Biographical / Historical

George A. Custer was born on December 5, 1839 in New Rumley Ohio. Custer attended the US Military Academy at West Point from 1858 to 1861. Custer fought for the Union army with the 7th US Cavalry during the American Civil War where he rose through the ranks achieving the title of Brigadier General. Custer is more famously known for his role during the American Indian Wars. During his service he frequently wrote letters to his cousin Augusta Frary, who was living in Canandaigua and Albion N.Y. Custer was killed during the battle of Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876 in the Montana Territory.

Condition Description

The typed transcripts and copies of letters are in excellent condition. The newspaper clippings are in poor condition, very fragile and deteriorating. The program is in fair condition.
