Biographical / Historical

Harriet was born on November 8 1866 in Amherst Massachusetts to Laurenus and Henrietta Seelye. Her father Laurenus was the first president of Smith College in Massachusetts. Harriet attended Smith College and graduated in 1888. She also wrote a 336 page biography about her father which was published in 1929. She accompanied her husband, Dr. Rush Rhees to Rochester N.Y. when he became the president of the University of Rochester in 1900. Harriet was active in local civic and social circles such as: The Colonial Dames, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, National Campaign Advisory Committee for the Negro Fund, Smith College Club, Wednesday Morning Club, The History Club, and the Genesee Valley Club. Harriet passed away in 1949 in Rochester N.Y.
