Biographical / Historical
The history of the clothing industry in Rochester NY goes back to the citys beginnings. The first tailor came to Rochester in 1812 and many others came shortly after. The majority of the workers involved in the early garment industry were immigrants. In 1848 garment wholesale establishments began to open around Rochester. Following the Civil War, many independent shops opened up where tailors began to compete with wholesalers. The beginning of the 1900s brought in an uprising in the garment workers unions. In 1913 there was a massive strike that led to workers leaving their factories and demanding better working conditions. The strike ended after only two months after a worker was killed by an employer.
