Biographical / Historical

Emma Smith was born Nunda NY to Richard and Belle Louise Swift in May 1895. She attended school in Nunda and took an early interest in local history. She obtained a scholarship to study in Albany where she attended college for Education. She taught english and history in high schools both in New York and New Jersey. She eventually attended Columbia University for library training after doing some summer work for the library. She worked for the Rochester Public Library until she retired in the 1960s. Emma passed away in March 1975 and is buried back in her hometown of Nunda.
