Biographical / Historical

The Rochester branch of the Woman's Ethical Club was founded in 1889 by Mrs. Mary Gannett. The clubs purpose being for women to come together and discuss social, philanthropic, and ethical questions amongst one another. The club had its first regular meeting in December of 1889 and were often attended by hundreds of women. The club was influential in the Rochester city school system reformation allowing women to gain admission to the University of Rochester and passing a resolution stating that women should be able to obtain a college education in Rochester N.Y. The Woman's Ethical Club unfortunately disbanded during the early to mid 1900's.
