Biographical / Historical
Gerrit Smith was an abolitionist from Utica N.Y. born in March 1797. Well known for his involvement in slavery abolition and womens temperence movements in N.Y. Smith became and remained close friends with Frederick Douglass over many years. Being a wealthy man, Smith donated both land and funds to help the anti slavery movement. Gerrit Smith also had ties with the Backus family from Rochester N.Y. through his first wife Wealtha Backus. Gerrit Smith died in December 1874 in N.Y.C.
