Biographical / Historical

Dr. Henry Strong Durand was born in Cincinnati Ohio in June 1861 to John and Martha Durand. Durand attended both Yale and Harvard for his M.D. and practiced medicine in Rochester N.Y. He spent a bit of his time aiding and tending to wounded and sick people in Mexico, where he himself got sick for a time. He would eventually make his way over to Europe where he would pass away in France in May 1929. Durand was a close friend of George Eastman, and is best remembered today for his summer camp on Lake Ontario, which Eastman frequented. The camp lands were donated to the City of Rochester in 1907, 484 acres that became the core of Durand-Eastman Park in 1909. He is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester N.Y.
