Biographical / Historical
The 8th NY Cavalry Regiment was a volunteer regiment from Rochester N.Y. in the Civil War. Col. Samuel Cooks was given the authority to organize and recruit this regiment in November 1861. Companies A-F, I, and K were mustered in first, and the intervening letters were soon to follow. The groups officially left the state in November 1861 and were eventually mustered out in June 1865.
