Biographical / Historical
John Gregg was a businessman with cast-iron founderies in Central New York. This collection contains Gregg's receipts, bills of sale, legal paperwork/agreements, patent paperwork, and a ledger [possible connection to Sodus Bay Phalnax].
John Gregg lived from 1802 to 1846 and resided in Palmyra, New York and Perry, New York where he created cast-iron founderies. His papers display a complex business life that he led which include interactions with inventor, William Wright and the Sodus Bay Phalnax which hold uncertain connections to Gregg. Within the collection, it is stated that Gregg partnered with Ellery Hicks for business in Perry, New York.
John Gregg married Anne Wilcox and they had five children - the collection's receipts reflect expenses for children. The notable son was William H. Gregg who gained wealth by creating a successful foundry in St. Louis, Missouri in 1846, where John Gregg passed away.
