This collection contains receipts, correspondence, and court papers for DeWitt C. Ellis. Ellis was the NYS superintendent of banks from 1873-1879 and also the father of Harvey C. Ellis who is one of the founders of the Rochester Art Club and the Rochester Society of Arts and Crafts.

Biographical / Historical
Dewitt C. Ellis was born in 1828 to Civil and Gurdon Ellis. By 1849 he had enrolled himself in law school and by would eventually study law at the office of Hon. James L. Angle. Ellis would acquire the position of Deputy State Treasurer in 1872 and became a state legislator in 1875. Ellis also served as superintendent of the banking department of the state of New York from 1874-1877. Ellis's wife would unfortunately pass away in 1884, and him in 1889 in Rochester N.Y.
