Swift and Hopkins map receipt
Content Description
This item is a receipt for a map of the road running from the Genesee River to Lewiston on the Niagara River through the town of Murray, completed by Philetas Swift and Caleb Hopkins. The receipt was written by Joshua Field, Town Clerk of Murray, N.Y. The receipt is dated September 25, 1815.

Biographical / Historical
Caleb Hopkins was born in Pittsford, Vermont in 1770 and died January 14, 1818 in Pittsford, New York. He was an early pioneer of Western New York, and settled in what would become the town of Pittsford. The town was later named by Hopkins after his hometown in Pittsford, Vermont. In 1809 he was elected supervisor of the town of Boyle and later that year was appointed United States collector of customs for the port of Genesee by President James Madison.
He served in the war of 1812 as lieutenant colonel and became colonel in 1813. After the war he was awarded several contracts for carrying the United States mail in western New York and Ohio. In 1815 he and Colonel Philetus Swift were employed as commissioners to make alterations in the state road, now known as Ridge Road. In 1816 and 1817 he was a member of the general assembly of New York in 1816 and 1817 and served on the committee in military affairs.
Philetus Swift was born June 26, 1763 in Kent, Connecticut and died July 24, 1828 in Phelps, New York. Swift was an early pioneer of Western New York. He fought in the War of 1812, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was a politician serving in various roles throughout his lifetime including Member of the Constitutional Convention, State Senator, Phelps Town Assessor and Town Supervisor, and Commissioner of Highways.
