Biographical Note
The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) was founded in 1890 after women involved in the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) were banned from involvment in the original organization that had been founded just one year before. To combat this a woman by the name of Mary Smith Lockwood held a meeting to organize what would become DAR, which still exists to this day.
The Irondequoit chapter of the DAR was started shortly after the organization's conception in 1894, hosted and led by Carolyn Crafts Little 16 women would come together to become the founding members of this branch. Throughout time it would become home to several notable names such as Louisa Rochester Pitkin--daughter of the founder of Rochester, Nathanial Rochester--and Susan B. Anthony herself. Unfortunately, there are no files in this current collection pertaining to those two women. Many of the files within this collection are small scraps pertaining to family trees, research, and letters officiating certain family lines.
