Biographical / Historical

Jacob Gould was born in Boxford, Massachusetts in 1794. He moved to Rochester NY as a school teacher in 1819 and eventually became a well known shoemaker and merchant in the area. Gould also served in the military in the NY State Militia as General of the 4th Division. Gould became mayor of Rochester at the age of 40 in 1835. After his term in office, Gould would go on to work at Rochester banks, railroads, and as a trustee at the University of Rochester. He would pass away in Rochester NY in 1867 and is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery.
