Badger Family Papers
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of the papers of the Badger family, a white Rochester family. Robert A Badger was the vice-president and treasurer of Curtice Brothers Company and president of the Rochester Chamber of Commerce (1906). His papers in this collection date between 1891 and 1926. They consist of correspondence. His wife, Ella Louise Smith Badger, is represented by her childhood diaries. Their daughter, Lois Badger, is represented by material on her travels, writing and charitable donations.

Biographical Note
Robert Augustus Badger was born August 21, 1859. He married Ella Louise Smith, with whom he had a single daughter, Lois. Robert A. Badger was a prominent figure in the Rochester business community. He was secretary of the Curtice Brothers Company at its incorporation in 1887, ultimately retiring as vice-president and treasurer in March of 1923. Curtice Brothers was a large canning and food preservation company, and Badger's leadership within it also led to his taking a prominent role with the Rochester Chamber of Commerce, serving as president in 1906. Robert Badger passed away on December 20, 1942.
Ella Louise Smith Badger was born May 17, 1859, the daughter of Reverend and Mrs. Phineas Atwater Smith. Rev. Smith was the descendant of pioneer Rochester settlers, who moved to Rochester from Connecticut in 1818, and a love for Rochester's early history was passed on Ella. She married Robert Augustus Badger on May 6, 1884. The Central Presbyerian Church accepted her as a member in 1886; she was also one of the founders of the Century Club in 1915. She passed away on February 25, 1949
Their daughter, Lois Badger, was born April 1, 1889. She attended Miss Hakes' School, graduating in 1907, before attending Mt. Vernon Seminary in Washington, D.C. and the Mechanics' Institute. She served at the Red Cross Canteen in the New York Central Railroad Station during World War I, and ran the Old Courthouse at Edgerton Park for the 1934 Rochester Centennial celebration. Lois joined Central Presbyterian Church in 1907. She was known for her involvement with genealogical and antiquarian pursuits during her lifetime. She passed away on December 25, 1949.
