Ira C. Sapozink papers
Scope and Contents
This collection documents the many activities and events of Ira C. Sapozink, who served as Director of Promotions for the Times-Union newspaper of Rochester, New York. The materials date from 1936 to 1965. The majority of the materials are scrapbooks that include correspondence, photographs, and newspaper clippings related to the Soapbox derby, Harvest Queen Competition, the Elks lodge, Rochester Red Wings bat boy contest, and the All High Music Festival.
Other topics include army recruiting, the Jewish Community Council, and the Democrat and Chronicle National Caddy Tournament. The scrapbooks also include invitations, cards, articles about Sapozink, and sports articles written by Ira Sapozink.
The collection holds correspondence from many notable people including, Ann Landers, New York Governor, Nelson Rockefeller, United States Republican Representative and New York Senator Kenneth Keating,Frank Gannett, and National Football League quarterback John Unitas.

Biographical Note
Ira C. Sapozink was the Director of Promotions for the Times-Union newspaper based in Rochester, New York. He contributed boundless energy and enthusiasm to a wide array of civic causes.
He was the Exalted Ruler of the Elks, Soapbox Derby Chairman of the All-American Soapbox Derby’s Control and Rules Committee, Director of the Rochester Soapbox Derby for 20 years, Festival Director of the Monroe County Harvest Queen Festival, director of the Annual Easter Egg Hunt (dropped 3 dozen plush bunnies from the Gannett helicopter), unofficial welcome committee for guest to the Rochester area, which included Motorcade Chairman for Richard Nixon’s visit to Rochester, New York in October 1960. He was involved in youth programs, Rochester clubs and societies, and was a guest speaker and/or Master of Ceremonies for many different events in Rochester.
After his death in 1963 Ira C. Sapozink awards were created by Rochester Business Institute, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Gannett newspapers for Monroe County residents that have made the greatest contributions to the Rochester community with a particular interest of youth activities.

Abstract
This collection consists of papers collected by Ira C. Sapozink, Director of Public Relations for the Times-Union newspaper of Rochester, New York. The materials date between 1934 and 1963. The materials consist of scrapbooks, photographs, correspondence, newspaper articles, and ephemera.

This series consists of 17 scrapbooks and three boxes divided into three series:
Series I: Scrapbooks, 1936-1963
Series II: Correspondence, 1943-1963
Series III: Miscellaneous, 1934-1963
Immediate Source of Acquisition
This collection was donated to the Local History and Genealogy Division, Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County N.Y. by St. John Fisher College on August 28, 2014 [Accession number 2014.062]. Two additional albums were donated by St. John Fisher as part of a larger gift in August of 2023 (Accession number 2023.018).

Physical Description
The scrapbooks are fragile. The items are glued or taped into the scrapbook pages. Some items are loose and the glued in items are warping and the glue is showing through in areas, making some items difficult to read. Scrapbooks should be digitized.
Processing Information
All scrapbooks were wrapped in paper and tied with string. Some scrapbooks are interleaved with tissue paper. The correspondence in in chronological order as are the scrapbooks.
