Gladys Reid Holton War Council Collection
Scope and Contents
Gladys Reid Holton was the executive secretary of the consumer division and community service section of the Monroe County War Council during World War Two. She assembled the materials in this collection, consisting of pamphlets, meeting notices and minutes, arm bands, and tags from WWI and WWII. Included are her radio scripts on home economics, broadcast over local stations. The materials date from 1917 to 1945.

Biographical Note
Gladys Reid Holton was born in 1898. She attended the State University of New York at Geneseo before going to Vassar for graduate studies. Returning home, she taught in Webster, then in Rochester, all the while being active in civic matters. During World war Two, she served as the executive secretary of the consumer division and community service section of the Monroe County War Council. In 1946, she joined the Rochester Museum and Science Center (then Rochester Museum of Arts & Sciences) as curator of cultural history. A long-time volunteer at the Museum, Holton was asked to join the staff by Museum Director W. Stephen Thomas. After retiring in June 1968, she worked for the Strong Museum until 1977. Gladys Reid Holton passed away in Oneonta, New York on July 21, 1984.
