Scope and Contents

This series consists of the records of Rochester City Historian, Joseph Barnes. The materials are dated from 1978 to 1987. The materials consist of correspondence, reports, articles, newspaper clippings, and photographs.

The correspondence in this series consists of general research questions, genealogy requests, speaking engagements, events, budgets, and reports. This series also contains information regarding the Rochester Sesquicentennial in which Barnes was instrumental in planning.

The “Miscellaneous” sub-series contains budget reports, annual reports, events, some general correspondence, publications, forms, articles written by Barnes and others, conferences, grants, finances, and exhibitions.

Biographical Note

Joseph Barnes succeeded Blake McKelvey as Rochester City Historian. He became Assistant City Historian for Blake McKelvey. Upon McKelvey's retirement in 1973, Joseph Barnes was made Rochester City Historian. Barnes received his doctorate in History from the University of Buffalo. Barnes left the office in 1987 upon conferral of his Master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Buffalo.

Although Joseph Barnes tenure as City Historian was relatively brief he was the editor and contributing author to Rochester History, wrote articles, conducted research, and planned the Rochester Sesquicentennial as well as many other events.
