Scope and Contents

This series documents the publication of the World War Service Record, Volumes I-III. The correspondence includes letters of inquiry between the city historian and servicemen from Rochester, New York that served in World War I regarding their service records. It also includes correspondence regarding the distribution of complimentary copies, analysis and advance sheets, the Bonus Act, and the approval and payment of bills for the publication.

The series includes reports from local historians from the town and villages in Monroe County. It also contains announcements regarding the status of the publication, and calls for greater participation in the project.

In addition to the correspondence and reports, this series also contains estimates, bids, contract, newspaper clippings, and mailing lists regarding the publication of the three volumes.

Administrative History

In 1921, City Historian Edwawrd Foreman was charged with writing an account of World War Service Records of Rochester, New York, 1914-1918. Foreman maintained these service records to offer a complete account of Rochester soldiers, sailors, and marines who entered the service of the United States from Rochester, New York. Rochester and Monroe County sent upwards of 20,000 men into World War I.

Volume I, Those Who Died for Us was published in 1925 and covers all Gold Star men with their photographs. The Gold Stars indicated that a family lost a loved one in the service of the country. This volume was presented to every Gold Star family as a memorial.

Volume II, Those Who Went Forth to Serve covers a condensed record of all soldiers, sailors, and marines who served in Rochester and Monroe County. It was published in 1928.

Volume III Those Who Supported the Service contains the story of home organizations, movements, and welfare activities. It includes 63 personal accounts written by the men and women of Rochester. This volume was published in 1930.

Abstract

This series consists of the papers regarding the publication of the World War Service Record, a three volume publication of all soldiers, sailors, and marines from Rochester, New York that served in World War I. The materials are dated between 1922 and 1930. The materials consist of correspondence, reports from each town and village in Monroe county, newspaper clippings, bids, and mailing lists.

This series consists of seven boxes divided into three sub-series:

Sub-series A: Correspondence, 1922-1928

Sub-series B: Reports, 1922-1924

Sub-series C: Volume II and III, 1924-1930

This series was created during the daily operations of the City Historian's Office.

This project was made possible by a grant from the Local Government Records Management Improvement Fund.

Processing Information

The original order of this series was maintained. The folders are arranged in a rough alphabetical order. The newspaper clippings in the folders were extremely fragile and were placed in acid-free envelopes. All metal fasteners were removed.
