Oval, metal pin, inscribed with the words, "Newsboy registered by Board of Education, Rochester, N.Y." A window in the center of the pin features an orange paper insert, covered by plastic, with starts on the sides and the number 21 printed in the center. "Leon Patterson," is written in cursive on the backside of the paper insert. According to the website, Mornings on Maple Street, written by Marshall Knox, as part of the Lewis Hines project, Newsboys, Newsgirls and other street trades, Rochester, N. Y., the Rochester Board of Education was responsible for issuing badges to newsboys. Boys were issued permits after registering and obtaining a badge, for 25 cents. Most boys never bothered to register and often skipped school for work. Despite a concentrated effort by a group of concerned women, to round up the newsboys during the day, public demand for newspapers on every corner, and a lack of enforcement, kept the boys in business and out of school.
