Subseries A: Gay Rights, 1979 - 2018, bulk: 1979 - 1993
Scope and Contents
This series contains materials relating to Tim Sally's activism work for gay rights beginning in the 1980s with his participation in the first National March on Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights and his work co-founding several LGBTQ+ organizations in Rochester, New York, including Dignity-Integrity, CREATE*: Justice, and Friends and Family of Gays in Rochester (FFL/G Rochester), the local affiliate of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG).
Also included are materials documenting Sally's intactivism work to oppose the non-therapeutic, non-consensual genital modification of male infants until they reach the age of consent through his work with the National Organization to Halt the Abuse and Routine Mutilation of Males (NOHARMM) and his publications under his alias Tim Hammond.
The series also contains materials concerning the immigration struggles for binational same-sex couples with a focus on Sally's experiences alongside his husband Bernhard Vey as the couple raised awareness for the issue and advocated for legislation to eliminate discriminatory barriers for individuals to sponsor their same-sex partner for immigration.
The series also contains a substantial volume of material documenting Sally's participation in the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in 1987, photographs of the inaugural display of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, and first-hand testimonies and ephemera from Sally's arrest as part of the demonstration of civil disobedience outside the Supreme Court Building to protest the Court's ruling upholding Bowers v. Hardwick.
