Scope and Contents

This series consists of records pertaining to the The Empty Closet, a Rochester, New York based monthly newspaper distributed by the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley. The materials date between 1984 and 1990. The materials consist of advertising layouts, advertising logs, issue logs, loose headers, notes, and issue layouts.

This series also contains a small number of photographs from 1984 to 1985.

Administrative History

The Empty Closet is a free newspaper originally published by the University of Rochester Gay Liberation Front in 1971. It was started by Bob Osborn and Larry Fine, the founders of the University of Rochester Gay Liberation Front. The Empty Closet is now published by the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley, based in Rochester, New York. It is New York State’s longest continually published LGBTQ newspaper. The newspaper covers local, state, national, and international news as well as issues pertaining to the LGBTQ community.
