Biographical / Historical

The Scottish Women's Society (often referred to as the Scottish Women's Club) was a social and cultural club in Rochester, New York. The club met for monthly social nights in members' homes, generally involving musical performances, dance, and games. The Society also engaged in charitable work, notably maintaining a "hospital bed fund." A 1900 newspaper article states that the Society would have its attention engaged that winter by the French Revolution, suggesting that it was a study club, but later newspaper accounts do not mention readings or discussions as one would expect if that was the case. The Society continued to meet well into the 20th century. Newspaper records show that it continued to exist following the most recent date of the materials in this collectionm meeting at the Daughters of the American Revolution house in the 1950s and 1960s. The final meeting notices appear in the newspaper in 1965, but it is not clear if the organization officially folded at that time.
