Mr. Karl S. Kabelac served for over 30 years as a librarian in the Rare Books, Special Collections and Preservation Department at the University of Rochester's Rush Rhees Library.This collection of banking-related materials brings together several of Mr. Kabelac's interests. Two folders contain original documents related to the formation and early governance of the Traders National Bank of Rochester. These include the original Articles of Agreement between the Eagle Bank and the Manufacturers' Bank to the form the Traders National Bank in 1859. Also present are a check and a certificate of deposit from the Traders National Bank.Folder 3 houses a copy of an article on the Traders National Bank written for Bank Note Reporter in 2005. Folder 4 is a research file on Traders National Bank of Rochester, containing newspaper clippings and copies of historic documents.

Biographical / Historical

Mr. Karl S. Kabelac served for over 30 years as a librarian in the Rare Books, Special Collections and Preservation Department at the University of Rochester's Rush Rhees Library. While there, Mr. Kabelac played a significant role in the preservation of Rochester's history, not only as an archivist, but also through his indexing, writing and personal collecting. He is best known for the series of indexes to Rochester-area images and publications that he was instrumental in creating.This collection reflects his interest in and work on the area's banking and bank note history.

The Traders National Bank of Rochester was formed in 1859 from the union of the Eagle Bank and the Manufacturers Bank. Granted a Federal charter in 1865, Traders National Bank was the largest and longest-lived Rochester bank of the National Bank Note era. The bank was led by Simon L. Brewster from its foundation until his death in 1898, and then by his son Henry until 1917. Final president Henry F. Marks took office in 1917 and guided Traders National Bank until it merged with the National Bank of Commerce to form the National Bank of Rochester in 1924.

Abstract

This collection includes historic documents pertaining to the combination of the Eagle Bank and Manufacturers' Bank to form the Traders National Bank of Rochester in 1859, and pertaining to major events in the operating history of the Traders National Bank. The collection also includes research files collected and an article authored by local librarian Karl Kabelac.

Condition Description

The documents are in uniformly good condition. Most show some degree of tanning, and the iron gall ink is fading on one, but they are all intact and readable, The modern article and research file are in excellent condition.
