Scope and Contents

This collection contains 4 boxes of materials pertaining to both the Green and Jordan families. The Green family migrated to Rochester, New York from Red Bank, New Jersey. The Jordan name came from Anthony C. Jordan, a notable physician and public health leader who married Katherine Green. The materials date from 1878 to 1991, and letters, documents, photographs, books and newspapers.

Biographical / Historical

Originating from Red Bank, New Jersey, the Green family eventually made their way to Rochester, New York. Shade Green and his wife, Catherine, lived in Red Bank for over 60 years. Their son and his wife, Alexander and Viola Green, had two daughters named Catherine Hawkins and Mildred Green, both of whom lived in Rochester, New York.

Doctor Anthony L. Jordan was a notable African American doctor in the Rochester, New York area. Born in Guyana, South America on September 18th, 1896, he arrived in the United States in 1919 and graduated from Howard University School of Medicine in June of 1926. He began practicing in North Carolina before moving his practice to Rochester, New York. Doctor Jordan worked in and for the Rochester community until his passing in 1971.
