Scope and Contents

Manuals, rule books, song books (also some Brownie books), correspondence, various newspaper clippings, photos of Girl Scouts, plus other photos. Details the beginning of the (white) Girl Scouts in Rochester. Mary A. Paris, a member of Third Presbyterian Church, became leader of Troop 5, one of the first troops in Rochester. Paris later began a Brownie troop for younger girls.

Biographical Note

Mary A. Paris founded Rochester's first (white) Girl Scout troop in 1918 at the Third Presbyterian Church, where she was director of religious education. Prior to moving to Rochester about 1916, Paris was active in leading the Girl Guides, a precursor to the Girl Scouts, in Watertown, N.Y. Paris continued her involvement with the Rochester Council of Girl Scouts throughout the 1920s and 1930s. She died in November of 1942.

Abstract

The Mary A. Paris Papers document the beginning of (white) Girl Scouting in Rochester. Mary A. Paris founded the first Girl Scout Troop in Rochester (Troop 5) in 1918 at the Third Presbyterian Church, where she was director of religious education. Paris remained involved with the Rochester Council of Girl Scouts into the 1930s. The collection includes newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence, pamphlets, and Paris' personal copies of Girl Scout handbooks and other materials published for scouts and troop leaders.
