Susan Kinsey collection of 19th century Monroe County diaries
Content Description
Five diaries from Western and Central New York State, see inventory for details.
This collection contains diaries from two rural Monroe County, New York families of the nineteenth century. The diary of George Gallup dates from 1848 to 1858 and was written in Sweden, New York, while the diary of Frank and Rosa Rowley was written in Hilton, New York, between 1885 and 1889. Both diaries address the day to day lives and activities of their authors. The Gallup diary takes the form of a day book, and largely covers pre-Civil War farm life. The Rowley diary addresses the same concerns for a family a generation later, with the addition of containing the family's daily fiscal accouting.

Biographical Note
Susan Kinsey has served as an interpreter at the Genesee Country Village and Museum for over 40 years. These diaries came from the extensive research collection that she and her husband created to inform their work at the museum.
George Gallup (1833-1925) was the son of Eli and Hannah Gallup. Eli moved to Sweden, N. Y., from Albany County in 1830. A widower, he already had five children from his first marriage, and George was one of the two sons he had with Hannah, whom he met in Sweden. George married Dilla Houston, only to see her pass away at the age of 35. They had four children: Irad (1860-1944), Charles H. (1863-1942), John (1866-1948) and Helen (1868-1948). After Dilla's passing, George married Sarah Darling, a schoolteacher, in 1877. Sarah would outlive George by four years, spending them living with Helen.
Frank Rowley was born in Greece, N. Y. on October 21, 1852, to S. S. and Elizabeth Davis Rowley. He married Rosalia Burritt on February 8, 1874. She was the daughter of Sylvester and Eunice Burritt, who had been early pioneers in the town of Parma, and was a school teacher before marrying Frank. The couple settled on a farm on Burritt Road, eventually moving into the village of Hilton in 1907. They were active members of the Free Baptist Church, with Rosalia serving as a teacher. Both were also active in the Parma Grange. Frank and Rosalia had three children: Anna (Bagley), True and Milo. Frank passed away on December 2, 1914, and Rosalia was deceased on May 12, 1927.
