Biographical / Historical
David Schuyler owned a 55-acre farm in Gorham, New York in Ontario County with his wife, Betsy and son, Daniel. Daniel remained at home well into adulthood to work as a farmhand. According to the Ontario Land Ownership map of 1874, Schuyler's farm was located approxiamately on Mumby Road in Canandaigua, New York. According to the 1880 farm census of Ontario county, the Schuyler farm was valued at $5,250 ($163,500 in 2025).
Most of the letters were addressed to both David and Betsy and were written by Sarah Archer, as early as 1857 to 1881. Sarah's precise letters show that her and her husband Peter held residence for several years in Verona, New York in Oneida County. Included in the collection is a roughly organized family tree of the Ward family, some of whom wrote letters to David and Betsy. Other letters within the collection are from Issac Ward, Hannah Ward, Margret Ward, and Jacob Ward who mention other family members within the correspondence.
