Administrative History

The Friends of the Rochester Public Library formed in November 1953 under the leadership of Arthur J. May. The group inteneded to serve as a library booster club, promoting public awaareness of the library and its facilities. Their first programs included a book fair and a local author's night. They introduced an Annual Literary Award in 1957, and began the long-running Noon hour Books Sandwiched In and Films Sandwiched In series in 1958. More recent programs include the Tuesday Topics series and the annual Art of the Book exhibition. The organization merged with the Rochester Public Library Foundation in [year?], and the new Friends and Foundation of the Rochester Public Library maintained the programming tradition of its predecessor.
