Scope and Contents

This collection documents the activities of Daniel P. Allen, the brother-in-law of Joseph Harris of the Harris Seed Company. The materials include personal letters, business correspondence, receipts, and payroll vouchers for both his personal accounts and those that he maintained for the United States Army. The collection also includes a 1911 book titled "Sketch of the Life of John C. Jameson" which includes an extended family history.

The materials are dated between 1800 and 1865, with a bulk of the materials dated between 1844 and 1865.

Biographical / Historical

Daniel Paris Allen (1826-1884) was the son of John Spooner Allen (1791-1853) and Fannie Scovill (1780-1875). He became an engineer, specializing in bridge construction, and after was in partnership with various furnace and cooking stove companies. He married Annie Webb Harris (1833-1880) in 1859. Annie was the sister of Joseph Harris (1828-1892), founder of the Harris Seed Company. Daniel enlisted in the Civil War in 1862 and was commissioned by President Abraham Lincoln as "Captain and Commissary of Subsistence of the Volunteers". He also served under Brigadier General C. S. Hamilton and General Buford. Daniel Allen was also a ticket freight agent for the Rochester and Pittsburg Railroad. Daniel died of Bright’s disease on August 10, 1884.

Custodial History

These papers were donated to the Office of the Historian by Della Leland (nee Somers), on February 8, 1977.The papers belonged to her grandfather, Daniel Paris Allen.
