This collection consists of four albums compiled by by Dellon Marcus Dewey, a prolific early Rochester writer and bookseller. The albums are collections of plates or descriptive materials related to Rochester's nursery industry. Only one book is dated (1872), but all presumably come from this time period.

Biographical Note

Dellon Marcus Dewey was born on May 18, 1819 in Cooperstown, New York. He moved to Rochester in 1833, and soon entered the book trade. For several decades he was the city's leading book dealer, as well as being a published author in his own right. He was also noted as an art and music critic, giving the first lecture on "Art" at the University of Rochester. He married Sarah J. Childs (of Rochester) in 1844, with whom he had 3 children. They resided at 398 East Avenue. Dewey was a member of the Genesee Lodge, International Order of Odd Fellows, and the Yonondio Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons. He also was a member of St, Luke's Church and one of the founders of Christ Church in 1856, at which he was a vestryman at the time of his death on January 17, 1889.

Condition Description

All of the albums are in similar condition. The covers are worn, with intact boards, weak but intact hinges and complete spines. The text blocks are sound but of variable condition, ranging from clean to lightly foxed. There is ink transfer from the prints in one album.
