Biographical Note
This collection consists of papers from the family of Alice McAdams, a resident of Rochester’s Maplewood neighborhood. Three of her ancestors created or collected the materials in this collection:
Henry F. Hines (February 26, 1843- February 8, 1897) was an only child, born to Harvey and Betsey Hines in Oswego, New York. He joined the 24th New York Volunteer Infantry in May of 1861 and had his right thumb shot off at the First Battle of Bull Run. After this unknit was discharged, he joined the 184th New York Volunteer Infantry in 1864 and served until the war’s end. Together with his wife, Phoebe Jane (September 4, 1848-February 1, 1911), he raised 5 children: Charles, Jane, Betty, John Henry and Ellen. Henry Franklin Hines spent much of his life as a laborer. He is buried in Pennellville, New York.
Henry Hines, Sr. was the grandson of Henry Franklin Hines and son of John Henry Hines. Henry Jr. (February 1, 1889-December 31, 1968) was an only child. He married twice, first to Edna Best in 1909; then, following a divorce, to Georgina Bourque (1891-February 2, 1967). Henry and Georgina met while working at the McCurdy’s department store in downtown Rochester; he was the buyer for men’s underwear while she was a buyer for women’s underwear. Following their marriage (around 1920), the couple moved to Fallon, Nevada due to Henry’s asthma; their son, Henry, Jr., was born there. They later (late 1920s) moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where their daughter, Mary Catherine, was born. By 1930, they had moved back to Rochester, so as to be closer to relatives in Syracuse and Fulton, New York. For most of their lives in Rochester, they lived in the Beechwood neighborhood, first on Winstead Street, then at 845 Atlantic Ave. Henry Sr. was a parishioner at St. Joh the Evangelist Church on Humboldt Street and a member of the Men’s Club there.
Anna Reinagle and Frederick C. McAdam collected the Roman Catholic prayer cards in this collection. Anna (from Greece, New York; February 1, 1881-August 9, 1939) and Frederick C. (also called Frank, from Canandaigua, New York; July 16, 1883- June 5, 1973) married on May 21, 1908 in Rochester. They married on May 21, 1908, and raised 5 children together: Norman, Kathryn, Rita, Jeannette, and Frederick L.; Frederick C. outlived both Jeannette and Norman. Frederick C. worked in manufacturing for much of his career.
